Officialy known as the Kempeitai Political Department and Epidemic Prevention Research Laboratory, Unit 731 was a Japanese bio-weapons research program that has been cited for notorious acts of war crimes against prisoners of war during WWII. Basically, it was an anything goes research strategy applied to experiments with humans and bacteria. Interestingly, after Japan's surrender, the Supreme Commander of the Allied Powers, Douglas MacArthur, granted special immunity to the physicians of Unit 731 in exchange for their data on Bio-weapons.
